Canon 7D2, a heartfelt review.

By Tuck Loong

It has been a long 5 years before Canon came up with the new revision for 7D. Has the wait been worth it? This is my heartfelt review in real world situation.

Part 1: Use with Legacy lenses

The new Canon 7D2 is a joy to use with legacy lenses. The AF was fast and accurate, even in contrasty situation. You dont need USM L lenses to enjoy this camera unless you need the tracking for sports and wild life.

    Part 2: High ISO test

    For a long time, Canon users have been complaining about the lack of inoovative high megapixel sensor. However, there are many of us whom doesnt need that much megapixel but a sensor that delivers high ISO and low noise in performance. For this, the Canon 7D2 has truly delivered. Images were very usable up to ISO 6400.

    Part 3: Long exposure, noise control and dynamic range

    The Canon 7D2 has general good long exposure, noise control and dynamic range for a APS C sensor.

    Part 4: AF tracking and sports

    AF tracking and sports is where the 7D mark 2 truly shine. The success rate after fine tuning the AF menu and choosing the AF area is around 80%, not bad for a sub $2.5k camera.

    Part 5: Model shoot

    The Canon 7D2 is a very capable camera when it comes to accurate skin tone for post production workflow.

    Conclusion

    So is the Canon 7D2 for you? Its not a out of the world upgrade for existing 7D users but this is really a nice camera, at the correct price point for existing Canon users upgrading from the entry level cameras, epecially when they have invested heavily in quality EFS lenses.

    Pros:

    * Fast AF/ Tracking

    * Weather sealed

    * Good Buffer with fast cards

    * Low light AF is good

    * Good ISO/low noise performance up to ISO 8000

    * Good battery life, easily around 1000 shots per charge

    * Good AF menu to customise AF performance

    Cons:

    * No AF focus indicator during tracking in AI servo AF mode. One got to trust the camera

    * Slow AF in live view/video compared to some mirrorless

    * Sensors resolves less details than some competitors at base ISO

    * No 4K video

    * No touchscreen
